The Religious Education Department at Holy Trinity Academy recognises its central role in developing and sustaining the distinctly Christian nature and ethos of the school community.

The department is fully committed to teaching and learning, encouraging students to learn about and learn from the variety of religious concepts introduced to them.
We aim to:

  • Provide knowledge and understanding of the Christian faith
    • Give opportunities to explore key beliefs and issues from other major religious traditions.
    • Develop appropriate skills, concepts and attitudes as they relate to the study of religion.
    • Help recognise the value of religion and how it relates to the study of religion and people’s lives.
    • Enable students to grow to their full religious and spiritual maturity by allowing them the opportunities to question, develop and discuss issues of faith and to help them make informed choices
    • Provide opportunities for self-reflection on each student’s personal faith journey
    • Challenge students to identify ultimate questions and their connection with religious beliefs
    • Be true to Gospel values by enabling students to gain an awareness and understanding of the local, national and global Christian responsibility towards others
    • Be dedicated to realising the potential of each individual and to celebrate success in all its forms.

We use a range of different teaching and learning approaches that enable all students to make progress and be successful. We encourage students to be independent learners and to recognise the importance of enquiry and reflection. The department supports students from different religious and secular backgrounds and encourages all students to use their learning to increase tolerance and understanding. We recognise our distinctive role in supporting students’ understanding of spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues and regularly encourage them to reflect on their own views and attitudes and those of others towards a range of topics.

At Key Stage 3 students study a range of religious concepts, traditions, ways of life and the meaning and importance of religious festivals. During Key Stage 3 students learn about the world faiths of Sikhism and Islam.

At Key Stage 4 all students follow the AQA GCSE Religious Studies (A) course which is examined at the end of three years of study. Students will study Components 1 and 2. In Component 1 students will study the beliefs, teaching and practices of the world faiths of Judaism and Christianity. This component is assessed through 1, 1hour and 45 minute exam paper and counts for 50% of the overall GCSE. In Component 2, students study two religious, philosophical and ethical studies themes and two textual studies themes. The two religious, philosophical and ethical studies themes that are studied are Theme A: Relationships and families and Theme B: Religion and Life. The two textual studies themes are Theme G: St Mark’s Gospel – the life of Jesus and Theme H: St Mark’s Gospel as a source of religious, moral and spiritual truths. This component is assessed through 1, 1 hour 45 minute exam paper and counts for 50% of the overall GCSE.

Students have a positive attitude towards the subject and enjoy opportunities to discuss and debate current moral and ethical issues, explore textual studies and discover the fundamental beliefs and practices of both Judaism and Christianity.

At Key Stage 5 students who opt to study A Level Religious Studies follow the WJEC Eduqas Religious Studies course. This encourages the study of a wide range of topics and supports students in the development of their analytical skills. Students study over two years, three components all of which are equally weighted to give the overall A Level qualification.

Component 1 is the study of a religion: Christianity. The study of this world faith is broken down into 4 themes. Theme 1 is the study of religious figures and sacred texts; theme 2 is the study of religious concepts and religious life; theme 3 is the study of significant social and historical developments in religious thought and theme 4 is the study of religious practices that shape religious identity. This component is assessed through a 2 hour written exam paper and counts for 33.3% of the overall A Level grade.

Component 2 is the study of the Philosophy of Religion. Again, this component is broken down into 4 themes. Theme 1 is the study of the arguments for the existence of God (inductive and deductive); theme 2 is the study of the challenges to religious belief – the problem of evil and suffering and religious belief as a product of the human mind. Theme 3 is the study of religious language. This component is assessed through a 2 hour written exam paper and counts for 33.3% of the overall A Level grade

Component 3 is the study of the Religion and Ethics. Again, this component is broken down into 4 themes. Theme 1 is the study of Ethical Thought; theme 2 is the study of Deontological Ethics; theme 3 is the study of Teleological Ethics and theme 4 is the study of Freewill and Determinism. This component is assessed through a 2 hour written exam paper and counts for 33.3% of the overall A Level grade

At Key Stage 5 all of our students study for an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). As part of our General RE programme, students choose a religious/moral/ ethical issue of their choice and produce a substantial project on their chosen issue. This qualification is studied over two years and encourages a range of skills including management of an individual project, record keeping, the exploration of a significant religious/moral issue of the students choice, time management, research, the critical evaluation of sources and the production of a bibliography.
